Tips To Help You De-Stress/Wind Down

Sunday, July 12, 2015

After my anxiety post went down so well I decided to do a post on tips that can help calm you down, de-stress you and help you wind down. Now although these are the things I use to help me when I'm feeling anxious they are all just as good for everyday stress or winding down even if you don't suffer from anxiety.

Have a Bath
Nothing beats a warm bubble bath to chill you out. Lavender is really good to help you relax but if that's not what you enjoy real out for any of your favourite bubble baths! Heck even light a candle or two if it helps - what you say goes!

Read a Book/Magazine
I find that reading can do one of two things. It can catch my attention and grip me to the point I get lost in the pages - as if it was my life and I was part of set up. Or! It can relax me and calm me to the point of falling asleep while still holding the book in my hands.

Watch a Movie/TV Show/YouTube
Much like a book - if a program/film is good enough it can grip your attention so hard you zone out from reality for a while. Keeping yourself distracted is one of the main ways you can help yourself de-stress. (*) Personally I don't think you can beat a Disney film or a Chick Flick.

Listen to Music
Loud, Soft, Dancey or Chilled - Pick whatever suits you and your mood. Sometimes you just need Loud music you can sing your lungs out to while dancing around your bedroom in your PJ's. Other times call for Slow meaningful lyrics which you can just close your eyes and relax to. See where your mood takes you to but know either way you'll come out feeling de-stressed and re-energised.

Turn off Social Media
Sometimes Social Media just isn't good for your mood. If you're already feeling down or stressed often places like Facebook can only make you feel worse. Now I'm not saying you have to go to the extreme of deleting it permanently but take a break - an hour, a day, a week, whatever you need at the time. I promise you will only feel better for it.

Now this one is not compulsory but personally I love to snack when I'm trying to chill out.  What I snack on all depends on the situation though. Sometimes you can't beat sugar filled, all the grease, full on fattening and others require a feel good health kick like a fruit salad or a yummy smoothie.

Get some Fresh Air
Open a window, Go for a walk or just sit outside. Science has actually proven than fresh air can do great things for your mood and health. Plus it feels great to just take in the fresh air and clear your mind.

Write it down
Whether you write down whats on your mind/what the problem is or you write down the positives both are ways of re-evaluating and to help get it off your chest. This doesn't have to be a one off or a every now and then thing either - this could become a daily way of thinking to help you get into a positive frame of mind and help you be thankful for the little things. There are even products out there to help you with this such as the Happiness Planner.

So there are my tips for chilling out/de-stressing. Let me know if you use any of these methods or if you have any of your own that I haven't mentioned. As always please feel free to leave me some comments below and I'll be sure to get back to you :)

If you need any help with anxiety there are people out there that can help.

*Now I'm not saying ignore/distract yourself from genuinely important problems but just take a step back calm yourself and regroup and take another look when you're in the right frame of mind.
